Cardiff-based Cansford Laboratories has been awarded a contract to carry out medical testing services for the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
The General Pharmaceutical Council regulates pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacies in Great Britain. Their role is to protect the public to ensure they will receive safe and effective care when using pharmacy services.
One of the GPhC’s activities is to investigate concerns about pharmacists and pharmacy technicians that could suggest there is a risk to the safety of patients or could affect the public’s confidence in pharmacies. This includes situations where there may be a risk to the public if a pharmacy professional is misusing alcohol or drugs.
Medical testing helps the GPhC establish if and what substances have been or are being misused by a pharmacy professional. Cansford’s Managing Director, Kim Bagley commented:
“We are pleased to be able to support the important work of GPhC by providing medical testing services. Testing provides clarity for the GPC to help establish misuse and members to show adherence to GPC standards of practice.”
