Cardiff-based Cansford Laboratories has been awarded a contract for the third successive time to help the General Medical Council (GMC) keep doctors and patients safe through chemical toxicology testing.
Having re-tendered and secured the new contract, Cansford Laboratories will provide and deliver toxicology services for the GMC for a further two years.
As a professional regulator, the GMC works to protect patients and improve doctors’ education and practice across the UK. The GMC acts when it believes a doctor may be putting the safety of patients, or the public’s confidence in doctors, at risk.
Cansford Laboratories will carry out chemical testing to support the GMC’s fitness to practice cases by establishing if, and what, substances have been or are being misused by a doctor and if the doctor has complied with undertakings or conditions imposed by the GMC.
Cansford Laboratories MD, Kim Bagley, says: “We are delighted and proud to have once again been selected to carry out this important service for the GMC.
“Securing the contract for the third time in a row is testament to our service capabilities and to the expertise and experience of our team at Cansford.
“We believe it reflects our commitment and dedication to ensuring we go beyond standards expected of testing laboratories, including making investments in equipment and people who help maintain prompt and accurate result delivery to clients and extend capability in research and development.”
Cansford Laboratories has recently invested in a second self-operated pipetting robot to further automate more of its processes and remove risks related to human error. Its detection processes ensure clients – including the GMC – can be confident its toxicology analysis is conducted to the latest and technically-appropriate standards.
Cansford Laboratories is UKAS certificate 7484 accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, including LAB51 protocol. It has also recently been awarded two new ISO certifications namely, ISO9001 – Quality Assurance and ISO45001 – Occupational Health & Safety Management.
In addition to the GMC tender and ISO awards, the team was also recently announced as winners of the ‘Sustainable Lab of the Year 2022’ at the prestigious Lab Innovations Awards, held in Birmingham, UK.
